Twinkies truly provide a Stairway to Heaven

The Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling celebrated its 80^th birthday this year – and people celebrated by eating 8-year-old Twinkies right out of the wrapper… True or False??

Ok, the Twinkie brand did actually turn 80-years-old, but — that bit about the 8-year old Twinkie is more of an inWorld fantasy of mine.

The fact is, Twinkies DO NOT LAST FOREVER –

They actually last about 25 days tops – then they get nasty!! More than 500-million Twinkies are sold each year and there are more than a half-a-million websites out there dedicated to these little cakes that are chock-full of preservatives.

Soooo – we here at VZones have found the perfect way to HONOR the Twinkie – Here’s a recipe that is sure to stop your heart with delight – or it may actually burst from all the sugar – ENJOY!!!

Fried Twinkies

• 6 Twinkies
• Popsicle sticks
• 4 cups vegetable oil
• Flour for dusting
• 1 cup milk
• 1 tablespoon oil
• 1 cup flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt

1. Chill or freeze Twinkies several hours or overnight.
2. Heat oil in deep fryer to about 375 degrees.
3. Combine milk, vinegar and oil. In another bowl, blend flour, baking power and salt. Whisk wet ingredients into dry; continue mixing until smooth. Refrigerate while oil heats.
4. Push stick into Twinkie lengthwise, leaving about 2 inches to use as a handle. Dust with flour; dip into batter. Rotate Twinkie until batter covers entire cake.
5. Place carefully in hot oil. The Twinkie will float, so hold it under with a utensil to ensure even browning. It should turn golden in 3-4 minutes. Depending on the size of your deep fryer, you might be able to fry only one or two at a time.

Remove Twinkie to paper towel to drain. Remove stick; allow Twinkie to set for about 5 minutes before serving. Makes 6 servings.
